“Secrets of Lehua” – Brand New!!
This is a brand new original 24″ x 48″ mixed media painting on special sugarcane texture, gold leaf and box frame. There’s so many things I’d like to say about this painting, but I think her secrets will emerge in time. To sum it up, this painting has taken me on an incredible journey. A journey of knowledge about the native people of Hawaii, about the heartache they endured, and the incredible strength shown in keeping the Hawaiian culture sacred and alive.
If you look up the word Lehua in the Hawaiian dictionary, you’ll find it has many meanings. It is not only the flower of the sacred Ohia tree which grows endemic to the Hawaiian islands, in lava, in multiple colors, but it’s also a small island just north of Ni’i hau. Lehua was also a Hawaiian goddess.
The texture I used in the background is from sugarcane. Having seen most of Maui’s sugarcane fields come and go over the years, I thought to preserve its essence as a focused element in this piece. And the woman in the painting is surrounded by the beauty of golden sugarcane as it reveals its secrets and untold stories of her ancestors, heard only in the wind and deep within her heart.
