It's all about the texture!!! When I retired from the gallery business in 2014, I had a vision to create a new line of artwork that involved multiple mediums, material that carried its own light and a special texture to enhance the image. I wanted to do something very different!
I begin creating the canvas or what I call a "substrate." Each painting has its own unique and professionally built frame substrate and is surfaced by a special texture. The texture is used as a stepping-stone and guide, helping me envision what the image is to become in the painting. I then hand press the texture with gold leaf, or silver leaf. This process has taken me several years to perfect. It's an entirely new method, with usually 4-5 layers of work underneath the image that makes each piece a one-of-a-kind and to the naked eye, gives the view another element of depth to discover in the painting.
I use my own photography to inspire the theme of my work. All of my paintings are original, and the metal leaf allows the image to reflect color based on the surrounding light and atmosphere.
There are two series of works, "The Figurative Series" is a series of paintings dedicated to our ancestors and guardian angels. The figures come purely from visions, but often come as spiritual guardians. I believe them to be protectors and they are meant to inspire great insight to those who can see their spirit!
My second series, "The Winged Series" is a dedication to all of those beauties with wings! Having lost some very close loved ones in my life, I feel their spirits often shine through animals, and most especially hummingbirds and other winged characters. This series represents the spirits of ancient ancestors and loved ones passed on, who occasionally show up and remind us that they're not too far away!
