About

About

Rachael Holton is Maui’s most recently discovered gem and is known for her textured and deeply moving artwork. Originally from Genoa, Nevada, Rachael attended art school at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon. She graduated with a BA in Fine Art and went on to earn a Masters Degree in Museum Studies, specializing in Exhibition and Design from San Francisco State University.

She began her professional career as a Gallery Director in 2001, building and managing art galleries both in the Bay Area and Maui. Rachael was also the Curator of the exhibition, "Generations - A Tribute to Mothers and Daughters Around the World." The exhibition was backed by the International Museum of Women in San Francisco and the UCSF Medical Center of Excellence. The exhibition’s panel consisted of nationally known surgeons, celebrities and museum board members. Holton has over twenty years experience in the gallery and fine art industry.

In 2014, Rachael retired from the gallery business and launched Rachael Holton Fine Art - a new line of artwork with her father, Steve Holton, a retired Builder and Project Engineer. Together, Rachael and her father work daily on creating a unique line of quality built frames and artwork in their studio in Haiku, Maui.

It's all about the texture!!! My intention is to create a new line of artwork involving multiple mediums that carry its own light! I want it to be impactful and different.

Why do I make textured canvases?

The textured canvases are a very important element to my art. Not only do they take a long time to make, but it’s also a very tedious project. However, I love making them because it means that every canvas is made from scratch and is unique! Each canvas requires a series of layers, my own special formula that will ensure a beautiful and sealed surface to the texture. If something wasn’t applied correctly, I need to start over again on that canvas.

Theoretically, my life has never been flat, so neither are my canvases. As an artist, I find much inspiration from nature, from life in general, and from old and new memories. I see so much beauty in nature like a flower, or branch, or a piece of fabric, things that hold much memory for me personally, and I encapsulate a piece of that inspiration into the foundation of my paintings. I use silver and gold leaf because I love the light, the changing colors and shadows it creates when it’s brought under light. The art literally shape-shifts throughout the day under the changing of natural light, enhancing the details that makes up each painting.

For me, these canvases are just the beginning of the painting, then the real work begins. Some say it’s an extra step, but I just feel that it brings a little something extra special to enjoy-besides just the painting. This is my process!

Inspiration

Inspiration

I use my own photography to inspire the theme of my work and I emphasize on two specific themes, The Figurative Series and The Winged Series.

The Figurative Series come mainly from my own personal visions. I often use my own body for study and to calculate proportion and occasionally I'll work from live models. I consider my figurative paintings to be spirit guides who bring great insight and reflection to those who can see their spirit!

The Winged Series is a dedication to all of those beauties with wings! Having lost some very close loved ones in my life, I often feel their spirits shine through animals I encounter, most especially hummingbirds and other winged characters. This series represents the spirits of our ancestors and loved ones who've passed on but occasionally show up to remind us that they're not too far away!
