This painting took me nine months to complete. The woman in the painting was made from intuition. Her pose was taken from a photoshoot I did, and I used my own hands as a reference. I also spent a great deal of time in and around the ocean in order to capture the nature and flow of the water in the background.

Like the ocean, this painting shape-shifts, and the woman’s spirit is reflective, like a mirror. I don’t want to say too much more about her, except for now that she’s complete, I feel like I’m just beginning to understand-beyond what my own personal experience was with her, what this painting is about. There’s definitely a strong spirit behind this painting, and in a way she was a great teacher to me in learning the art of and practice of being present. Present to all things, time and space within every moment. And to savor and cherish those moments – as they come and go.

Because this piece was incredibly intuitive in its making, I had to stay immensely focused on every element within the piece in order to make the painting work. If my mind wandered, which admittedly happened a lot, I’d had to redo the section I wandered in. This was the lesson. And in the end, she brought me a great deal of comfort, support, and guidance.
